The most commonly misspelled words in Canada (by province and territory)

In Saskatchewan, the most commonly misspelled word is Discipline. In the rest of the country, it’s Saskatchewan. (Okay, not really.)

When you make a spelling mistake in your Google search, the results usually figure out what you meant and offer the helpful, Did You Mean… results for the actual word. So, you found what you were looking for, and who cares about the lack of spelling?

Well some people do care. A common use of the search engine is to look up, “How to spell…” in order to find the proper way to spell a word. The team at Google Trends yesterday released their list of the most commonly misspelled words in Canada, broken down by province and territory.

Albertans, apparently, want to sound precocious (if they say it loud enough). The most misspelled word in that province is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. In Ontario, we can’t seem to spell colour. (I’m guessing many people use color.) For some reason in Quebec they try, but fail, to spell blueberry.

Misspelled words across Canada

    Newfoundland – Precious
    Prince Edward Island – Bargain
    Nova Scotia – Yacht
    New Brunswick – Elliptical
    Quebec – Blueberry
    Ontario – Colour
    Manitoba – Atheist
    Saskatchewan – Discipline
    Alberta – Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
    British Columbia – Pneumonia
    Yukon – Altar
    Northwest Territory – Facetious
    Nunavut – Anxiety

These might be fun discussion pieces. “What are people in Nunavut so nervous about, anyway?” But spelling can be serious business. When it comes to professional correspondence, and especially resumes, your spelling and grammar really matter. A single mistake can cost you a job opportunity.

With that in mind, courtesy of the team at Grammarly.com, here are the four words people most commonly misspell in their resumes.

    Definitely – frequently spelled: “definately”
    Separate – often spelled: “seperate”
    Paid – often typed: “payed”
Laid off – frequently written: “layed off”

So watch out for those.
